PASTOR’S CORNER June 12, 2012
Congratulations to all our graduates!! As a parish we make the commitment to continue to pray for you that you may use the many gifts God has given you so that you may grow in true wisdom and knowledge. You will grow physically over the summer, may your spiritual growth exceed all other growth.
Congratulations to all our fathers and all who watch over us and minister to us as fathers. We know that there is much more to being a father or mother than just a biological transfer of genes and DNA. Ultimately this day is a celebration of LOVE.
There have been a range of events which have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother’s Day tradition in 1906. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.
Historically a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was the most influential figure in the establishment of Father’s Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father’s Day was held in June was in 1910. Father’s Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.
Personally, after my Dad’s death I had some trouble celebrating Father’s Day but then a little child reminded me that I still had a Father, my Father in Heaven, and that I should make sure that I gave Him a nice present. That certainly changed my perception and we know that all father’s like one particular gift – your time. I encourage you to spend some extra time with your Heavenly Father today. You will be blessed!!
