PASTOR’S CORNER April 13, 2011
All during Lent there were two dead branches next to the Tabernacle. Last week one of them gave forth new leaves. It was very strange to see one branch in bloom and the other completely dead. In reality, both branches are completely dead. The one with leaves just doesn’t know it yet, it will shortly when its own energy dries up and there is nothing to replace it. Jesus says that if we are not branches on “His vine” we have no life in us for apart from the vine we can do nothing and then He adds: if we do not eat His body and drink His blood we have no life in us. Lent is a time of “springing forward” a time to develop spiritual muscles so that we can witness powerfully to the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ and fight against evil in all its forms.
How did you do this Lent? For a vast majority of Catholic and Christians it was an empty experience. After Ash Wednesday most went into spiritual hibernation. In general we became like most of the world, running on our own energy, living on a starvation diet when it comes to our spiritual life and unsure of our relationship with the Trinity. When we fail to pray, worship as a community and serve others we are like the branch with a few nice looking leaves that “will wither and fade under the heat of day”. This leaves us empty and unsure of our God’s love for us. When this happens we “look for love in all the wrong places”. But all is not lost, Jesus never forgets us and never stops challenging us to repentance.
Historically speaking on the Sunday (Palm Sunday) before Passover the sacrificial flock was brought into Jerusalem in anticipation of the sacrifice of Passover. Jesus joined this flock of lambs and was heralded as King, soon to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. For the next four days the flock was examined in the temple to make sure they were worthy. Jesus stayed in the temple and was examined by the Chief Priests and Sanhedrin, God found Him worthy. This is Holy Week, it is time to examine ourselves and our relationship with God. Come and join us. Make a decision to re-attach to the Lord Jesus Christ and enjoy being who we really are: sons and daughters of the Living God. Hosanna to the Son of David! Hosanna to the Son of David!
